* Kerosne lamp was invented in Ukraine. The kerosene lamp as you know it today was invented and constructed by two pharmacists – Jan Zeh and Ignacy Łukasiewicz, in Lviv in 1853. It was a significant improvement over lamps designed to burn vegetable or sperm oil.

* Famous Austrian Composer Ludwig van Beethoven has dedicated two of his symponies to a Ukrainian. This person was Andrii Rozumovski, the son of the last Ukrainian hetman. Andrii Rozumovski was a brillian diplomat and Beethoven’s benefactor. He spent all of his life in Vienna, where he met the composer. Beethoven and Rozumovski were good friends and their friendship led the composer to dedicate the 5th and the 6th symphonies to Rozumovski.
* Ostroh Academy was the first institution of higher education in Eastern Europe. It was established in 1576 by Polish nobleman of Ruthenian descent Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski.
* The deepest subway station in the world is located in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv. “Arsenalna” metro station was built in 1960 and lies 346.12 feet underground.
* The shortest city main streen in Europe is Kreshchatyk – the central street in Kyiv. It is lonly 0.8 mile long.
* The biggest city square in Europe is Liberty Square, which is located in Kharkiv, in the east of Ukraine.
* The biggest airplane in the world was designed and constructed in Ukraine. An-225 “Mriia” weighs 640 tons and can lift 80 passenger cars at a time.
* World famous Christmas Carol “Carol of the Bells” was written by a Ukrainian composer Mykola Leonovich.
